GLORY OF SOUTHERN PARTS OF SRI LANKA
SAVOUR OF THE SOUTHERN PROVINCE OF SRI LANKA
(“The Land Of The National heroes, poets and literati, dancers and craftsmen, curd and treacle”)
Southern province consisting of Galle, Matara and Hambantota district is one of the most fascinating provinces of Sri Lanka. With its long history, rich culture and bountiful gifts of nature, the southern province is a veritable treasure trove for those interested in delving into the region’s glorious past, savor its cultural miscellany or enjoy its natural beauty. The southern coastal belt is the most popular among the tourist and frequented by visitors all the year round but the real season kicks off during October to April when the monsoon moves North East and the sea becomes calm with blue skies.
When organized tourism was introduced to Sri Lanka in 1966, the southern province was among the first few places identified for development. Today the beautiful beaches of the southern province, its art and craft, and the ancient monuments, stilt fishing
industry are known the world over.

MIRACLE OF SOUTHERN PROVINCE TOURISM, SRI LANKA
In many ways, the south encapsulates Sri Lanka at its most traditional. Stretched out along a great arc of sunbaked coastline from Galle in the west to Tissamaharama in the east, the area remains essentially rural: a land of a thousand sleepy villages sheltered under innumerable palms, where the laid-back pace of life still revolves around coconut farming, rice cultivation and fishing (the last still practiced in places by the distinctively Sri Lankan method of stilt-fishing). Culturally, too, the south remains a bastion of Sinhalese traditions exemplified by the string of temples and giant Buddha statues which dot the coast, and by the colorful festivals celebrated throughout the region, which culminate in the exuberant religious ceremonies enacted nightly at the ancient shrine of Kataragama.
